English students at SVCC should focus on developing reading and writing skills and the ability to analyze and respond in various ways to information in order to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts. Embracing opportunities to utilize key reading and writing strategies covered in courses to hone skills and help adapt to new audiences and/or writing situations is strongly encouraged.

Odile M BlazquezSpecializing in developmental education, Odile has taught developmental English and reading for many years. In 2009, she received the Distinguished Service Award for Adjunct Faculty, and in 2011, she was recognized with the Student Support Leadership Award. She is a member of NADE, the National Association of Developmental Educators.

Thomas R IrishTom Irish received his Masters degree in English from Western Illinois University in 2001. He taught composition at WIU from 2001 until starting work at SVCC in 2005. He has taught SVCC's creative writing, journalism, literature, and composition classes at all levels. He is the advisor to The Works, SVCC's student-produced literary and arts publication, and is the co-director of SVCC's Honors program. He has published his own fiction and poetry in venues such as Literature Today, Mystery Times Ten, Calliope, and Vine Leaves Literary Journal, as well as in The Works. He lives in Davenport, Iowa with his two children.

Rae D BrunnerMs. Brunner is a published poet and a regular presenter at national and international conferences. She is particularly interested in writing and reading about conservation and environmental science and heads the SVCC Prairie Committee which is dedicated to renewal and expansion of the SVCC prairies.
