Welding
Welding is the process of fusing two or more parts using heat, pressure, or both. Students will learn the craft of joining metals, fabricating projects, repairing pieces, and problem-solving welding dilemmas.
Career Expectations
The study of welding provides career opportunities in fabrication, production welding,
maintenance, and union jobs such as pipe fitters and millwright. The Sauk Valley region
is teeming with opportunities for skilled welders.
Necessary Skills and Attitudes
A strong work ethic and a willingness to learn are key characteristics for success
in the welding program. Additionally, students should be equipped with great attention
to detail, eye-hand coordination, and ambition to understand welding processes.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Safety: Students will apply knowledge of industrial safety standards to the shop environment.
- Technique: Various levels of automation and sources of energy will be utilized to perform common welding processes.
- Welding Symbols and Blueprint Reading: A knowledge of welding symbols will be covered to ensure students are able to identify blueprint specs.
- Quality Control: Students will identify welding defects and methods of correction.
Meet The Faculty
Scott GillihanScott Gillihan has over 30 years of welding experience and has been an instructor at SVCC for more than 10 years. Scott has experience teaching all of Sauk's welding classes and has participated in welding training for outside companies.
