Art is the practice and study of materials, techniques, and methods for the creation of aesthetic objects and communication of visually charged ideas.

 

Career Expectations

The Associate of Fine Art (AFA) degree prepares students to transfer to a professional Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with concentrations in a variety of fine and commercial art fields such as Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Design, Videography, and Photography. The AFA degree also prepares students for entry level positions in field of art and design.

Students who pursue an AA in Art and transfer to complete a BA in Art can pursue careers in Art Education, Museum Studies, and Art History.

Advanced degrees in Art (Masters, Master of Fine Arts and PhD) offer expanded opportunities for job placement at the highest level in academia, fine arts and commercial communication fields. The jobs available are highly specialized and include working in the fields of education, museum management, art therapy, research, collection management and fine art restoration. Advanced degrees also prepare graduates for work a variety of creative fields either as an entrepreneur or as an employee for art production studios.

 

Necessary Skills and Attitudes

Students are expected to develop a rigorous studio practice and develop skills using a variety of artistic techniques while exploring the historic and contemporary related topics in art. Students are required to employ critical thinking skills and creative problem-solving methods while developing purpose for their artistic vision. Students need to be prepared to study perspectives in human history, ethics, philosophy, communication, and creativity. Students should prepare to practice defending their work through an extensive writing regiment and during an active critique schedule. These requirements help to promote the student’s success in refining their artwork, develop their communication skills and build confidence in the artistic process.

Art-making is a lifelong learning practice that requires patience and dedication.

 

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will create conceptually charged artworks using techniques, materials and methods appropriate to the intended result.
  2. Students will clearly communicate the cultural content, historic context, and artistic processes of their work visually, orally, and in writing.
  3. Students will model current professional practices and procedures within their field while focusing on developing a cohesive art portfolio.

Glenn Bodish

Glenn S Bodish

Glenn Bodish is originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania and currently lives and makes art in Illinois. He has exhibited his artwork nationally and is published in numerous books, periodicals, and commercial products. During his 40+ year career, Glenn has worked in the fields of fine art, commercial photography, illustration design, museum management and higher education.
