A Track & Field coaching veteran lead’s the recently formed Skyhawks Track & Field
team. Michael Stevenson enters his third year as the head coach, after starting the
program three years ago. Stevenson has 30 years of collegiate coaching under his belt,
with 22 years at Western Illinois University, 3 seasons at Purdue University, and
2 years at the California Institute of Technology.
Stevenson has seen a great deal of success during his collegiate coaching career.
He has coached every event area in the program during his tenure, but specializes
in the sprints and jumping events. He is a USATF Level II certified coach in the jumps.
His charges have seen success as well, as he has coached NCAA All-Americans, Conference
Champions and School Record Holders. Stevenson has multiple Coach of the Year honors
and has a track and field scholarship named after him at Western Illinois University.
As an athlete, Stevenson attended WIU, where he is still listed as the top-ten sprinter
in the program. He was a multiple time All-Conference performer, and was named regularly
to the Academic All-Conference team as well. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
in Kinesiology from Western Illinois.
Now at Sauk Valley Community College, along with being the head track and field coach,
Stevenson serves as the Director of Athletics, Director of the Fitness Center, and
teaches courses in Physical Education at the college. He resides in rural Sterling
with his wife Sara and three children (Riley, Ella, and Ruthanne).
