Function of the Job

Assist students with tutoring and academic problem solving.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Tutor students in academic subject areas.
  2. Assist students in the development of study skills and learning strategies. 
  3. At the discretion of tutoring and/or disability support supervisors, provide individual academic support to students with disabilities.
  4. Assist students in using assistive technology, including the use of software and equipment aids for students with disabilities.
  5. Identify and refer students to appropriate instructional and supplementary materials.
  6. Contribute to maintaining current, accurate student tutoring tracking records.
  7. Maintain and act as custodian of tutoring supplies and equipment.
  8. Supervise the Learning Commons Tutoring Center in the absence of the supervisor.
  9. Attend annual tutor training, supervision sessions, tutor meetings, and annual evaluation sessions with the supervisor as requested.
  10. Under the discretion of the tutoring coordinator: 
      1. Assist with tours of the Learning Commons.
      2. Assist with visits to classrooms to explain the services of the Learning Commons Tutoring Center.
      3. Assist with or conduct review sessions.
  11. Assume all other reasonable duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Functions

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must be comfortable working with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  3. Must have strong skills in customer service and possess excellent verbal and written skills.
  4. Must be able to work with Microsoft Office and Google products.
  5. Must be able to provide oral/verbal responses to student questions, and assist faculty given general guidance.
  6. Must be able to work in a team environment.
  7. Must be able to work flexible hours including some evenings.

Personal Interaction

Frequent contact is made with all levels of College personnel, students, faculty, the general public, and outside organizations in relation to specific departmental duties and services.

Supervision Excercised

Functional supervision is exercised over tutors and the learning commons tutoring center in the absence of the supervisor.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field and two years of experience related to academic support services. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and students required.
