Adult Education Instructor of Health Professions

Function of the Job

Instruct and support adult education students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care. The instructor must be knowledgeable of the philosophy and objectives of the College and adult education in order to plan, structure, and provide supplemental instruction to students in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) ICAPS Support Course and to instruct the Health Careers Bridge Course.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Instruct the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) ICAPS Support Course which includes providing supplemental instruction for the adult education students enrolled in NRS 101 and NRS 103 (CNA courses) and NRS 116 (medical terminology).
  2. Instruct the Health Careers Bridge course which includes career exploration in health care, instruction in student success skills, academic skills instruction (reading, health care math, and basic health science), and assistance with the transition to college and/or workforce.
  3. Collaborate with Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Instructor (NRS 101 & 103) and Medical Terminology Instructor (NRS 116) to design curricula for the CNA ICAPS Support Course.
  4. Attend the lecture portion of the CNA courses (NRS 101 & 103) to better understand what the students are learning in the classroom in order instruct the CNA ICAPS Support Course.
  5. Utilize a variety of instructional approaches to accommodate different learning styles and levels of functioning.
  6. Incorporate activities or topics of discussion pertaining to Career Pathways or transition to workforce or post-secondary education.
  7. Use a variety of strategies, approaches, and activities aimed at retaining students and improving their class attendance.
  8. Complete weekly class attendance records and submit to the program office.
  9. Incorporate digital literacy and the use of instructional technology into planned lessons.
  10. In accordance with grant requirements, complete the New Instructor Orientation online course within six months of hire.
  11. In accordance with grant requirements, maintain current knowledge of the field of adult education by completing 12 hours of professional development within each academic year (July 1 – June 30).
  12. In accordance with grant requirements, submit graded classroom assessments or exercises that demonstrate student progress to the program office.
  13. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Functions

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must have strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  3. Must be able to communicate effectively by email and phone on a daily basis.
  4. Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to students, employees, and the general public.
  5. Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products.

Personal Interaction

Frequent contact is made with students, and general public in the routine performance of duties and in providing routine departmental services and duties.

No supervision required.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required; preferably education or science-related degree preferred. Experience teaching adults with knowledge of adult education teaching methodology preferred. Experience or interest for teaching in the health sciences discipline area, commitment to and/or understanding and/or experience working with under-resourced students, strong communication and interpersonal skill,s and computer literacy skills including the ability to use online tools to supplement teaching is required.
