Adult Literacy Coordinator

Function of the Job

Provide direction for the Sauk Valley Community College Adult Literacy Program, Project VITAL, by coordinating academic services for adults who are English language learners or for native speakers who need to improve their literacy skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Manage the Project VITAL literacy program, provide support services to students in ESL classes, and provide outreach to tutoring sites/program partners throughout the community.
  2. Write and submit the annual literacy grant for Project VITAL.
  3. Responsible for Project VITAL grant management which includes preparing and managing the budget, preparing and submitting quarterly grant reports, and tracking program performance outcomes.
  4. Recruit, train and match volunteer tutors with Project VITAL students. Maintain volunteer training records.
  5. Recruit, test, and conduct intake interviews with potential Project VITAL students. Maintain intake records, pre and post testing records, and track student progress towards performance outcomes.
  6. Plan and implement the online and in-person tutor training events throughout the year.
  7. Provide assistance to students or community members seeking information on citizenship, including application assistance and study materials for the citizenship test.
  8. Work with student support services at Sauk Valley Community College to provide ESL learners the opportunity to transition to Sauk Valley Community College upon successful completion of the Adult Education program.
  9. Assist current and prospective students and tutors in the Project VITAL program with relevant needs. Complete monthly correspondence with matched students and tutors to check progress.
  10. Lead community literacy events such as Family Literacy Night and build partnerships to deliver these educational programs and events.
  11. If needed, provide instructional aide support in the ESL classroom and be willing to substitute teach for Adult Education instructors.
  12. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Functions

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must have strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  3. Must be able to provide verbal and visual presentations to faculty, staff, volunteers, students, and the general public.
  4. Must be able to communicate effectively by email and phone on a daily basis.
  5. Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products.
  6. Must be able to travel to multiple class site, local libraries, and teach multi-level lessons.
  7. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends.

Personal Interaction

Frequent contact is made with all levels of College personnel, students, and outside organizations in relation to routine departmental services and duties in providing appropriate assistance and information as requested.

Supervision Excercised

Volunteer VITAL tutors, student workers, and work studies.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent education and experience, knowledge of basic immigration laws, (2) two to (3) three years of teaching adult ESL or low level learners, bi-lingual, preferably in Spanish, and the ability to work with multilevel classes required.
