Student Support Services Project Director

Function of the Job

The TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS) Director is responsible for coordinating and evaluating program initiatives that focus on providing academic support and increasing retention, transfer, and graduation rates of low-income, first generation, and students with disabilities. The Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of SSS/TRIO Project operations and attainment of program goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintain current knowledge of the Department of Education regulations pertinent to administration of the student support services program and comply with all requirements.
  2. Prepare and submit all necessary U.S. Department reports; design and direct activities throughout the year.
  3. Train and supervise project staff; serve as search committee chair for open project staff positions.
  4. Ensure the delivery of quality academic advising and career development services to program students.
  5. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with departments/staff at SVCC, and other institutional partners including four-year colleges/universities to facilitate success for program participants.
  6. Review new student applications, monitor participant eligibility as defined by Department of Education regulations and select new participants with input from project staff.
  7. Maintain and monitor performance records for the project.
  8. Develop, monitor, and manage project budget according to project guidelines.
  9. Interview student participants, conduct needs assessments, and serve as primary advisor for a minimum of twenty of the project's participants.
  10. Supervise and evaluate a peer coaching/tutoring program.
  11. Supervise a student record and assessment system that maintains student files, grades, transcripts, contacts and assessments, and provide for security and organization of these records.
  12. Collect, analyze data, and evaluate the project outcomes on a regular basis.
  13. Facilitate College Student Inventory (CSI) training, student administration, data systems, and resources.
  14. Sort and generate CSI data based on College need.
  15. Arrange CSI training's for staff.
  16. Work with the Director of Research and Planning and the Dean of Institutional Advancement to secure funding for the continuation of the TRIO program by suggesting research studies and the collection of related data.
  17. Develop, in cooperation with the supervisor, annual goals and objectives.
  18. Prepare and submit to the supervisor all reports required or requested by the College including annual operational plans.
  19. Serve as a member of the administrative team, including service on the Leadership Council and cooperate with all members of the administration in addressing issues that relate to both student support services and the overall mission of the College.
  20. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
  21. Serve as Administrator on Duty on a rotating basis (3% tort).

Essential Functions

  1. Must support and understand the mission of the community college.
  2. Must have strong communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  3. Must be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to local community areas, institution, and the general public.
  4. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
  5. Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
  6. Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products.
  7. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends.

Personal Interaction

Frequent contact is made with all levels of College personnel, students, and outside organizations in relation to routine departmental services and duties and in providing appropriate assistance and information as requested.

Supervision Excercised

Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over the Administrative Assistant to the Student Support Services Project Director, Transfer Program Coordinator/Program Advisor, Academic Support Coordinator/Program Advisor, Academic Coaching Assistant/Program Assistant, peer coaches, and designated work-study students.

Requirements

Master's degree in Counseling, Administration of Higher Education, Student Personnel, or a related field. Three years experience in designing, administering, and managing educational opportunity programs, including staff supervision, budgeting, and record keeping, or four years experience at the Assistant Director level with supervisory experience in working with low-income or academically-disadvantaged populations. Experience in program evaluation and proficiency in oral/written communication. Proven commitment to the special needs of the target population and the objectives of the Program. Preferred: Ph.D. and knowledge of policies and regulations impacting federal education programs. Background similar to that of the Student Support Services Program participants.
