Learning Commons Librarian

Function of the Job

Assist with coordinating library operations; collaborate on acquisiton, cataloging, processing, and circulation of library content; supervise library staff. Prepare and deliver library orientations to students and visitors. Work with library staff to maintain integrated library systems. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate on leadership, direction, and management of all aspects of library operations in accordance with professional standards.
  2. Contribute to the assessment of unit services, activites, and implementation of changes for continuous improvement of library services.
  3. Contribute to the development, planning, and monitoring of the library budget, under the direction of the supervisor. 
  4. Contribute to coordinating operating hours and staff scheduling of library services.
  5. Contribute to hiring and supervising library staff and work-study employees.
  6. Contribute to identifying professional development needs and provide opportunities by recommending budget and specific training for staff.
  7. Provide backup to other library staff on an as needed basis.
  8. Collaborate on activities related to library collections, including selection, processing, weeding, promotion, and reporting. 
  9. Collaborate on the acquisition, licensing, and renewal of online holdings.
  10. Serve as a primary or backup administrator for library systems and services.
  11. Collaborate on reports on the use of library print and electronic holdings.
  12. Collaborate on reports required by College, state, and federal authorities.
  13. Contribute to the library maintaining compliance with Illinois State Library and consortia contracts and policies. 
  14. Research and adopt innovative practices related to library services and best practices.
  15. Market the library to district patrons, students, faculty, and others.
  16. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Functions

  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must have strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  3. Must be able to provide and understand verbal/visual orders from supervisor and to subordinates.
  4. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment
  5. Must possess excellent computer skills with the ability to work with Microsoft Office and Google products.
  6. Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
  7. Must be able to work evenings as required.

Personal Interaction

Frequent and personal contact is made with all levels of College personnel, faculty, students, and outside organizations in relation to specific departmental duties and services.

Supervision Excercised

Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over Learning Commons Library personnel.

Requirements

ALA accredited master's degree in library information science or library science, with at least one year of experience with reference services and information literacy instruction is required. Experience with creating online learning resources and working with a learning management system is desirable. Strong interpersonal skills are required.
